                II. SCAMP Program Information
SCAMP is a five-week summer day camp that seeks to provide therapeutic recreational experiences for individuals with disabilities ages 3-36 from over 25 school districts in the Metro Detroit Area.  SCAMPers enjoy a variety of activities such as music and art therapy, social skill and language enrichment, outdoor activities, and swimming on beautiful Walnut Lake.Founded in 1967, SCAMP has a long and proud tradition of providing a beneficial program that many parents, teachers, and campers have come to expect.  SCAMP is a part of the Bloomfield Hills Public School system; however is financially independent; relying solely on contributions, tuition, and fundraisers to exist.  Many families who send their children to SCAMP also struggle financially and ask us to provide them with scholarship assistance. The Bloomfield Hills School District prides itself in being the first to step up to the challenge of providing a summer program for individuals with disabilities in a time when many groups were seeking equality.  Since then, SCAMP helped to found Clarkston SCAMP in the 1970s, which is an independent camp also seeking to provide a quality camp experience for individuals with disabilities in Northern Oakland County and the surrounding area.  Recently, Rochester Parks and Recreation formed their own SCAMP known as RARA SCAMP which is another camp servicing individual’s within Rochester Schools.  Each are independent, however share the common goal of providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to enjoy a summer camp experience.

III. Student Teacher or Intern Responsibilities
You and your classmate(s) will be responsible for providing activities throughout the day and transitioning your class throughout the program.  The SCAMP Supervisors will provide you with a basic schedule with art, music, swimming, and physical education times.  You will be responsible for taking the children to these special activities and assisting the teacher with monitoring student behavior and participation.  Please notify us prior to SCAMP of any special college assignments or requirements that we can assist you with as well as any paperwork that will need to be filled out by a SCAMP Supervisor.

                IV. Themes
At SCAMP we try to make all activities meaningful to our participants.  Please check the website for this year’s updated academic themes to help you plan your activities.

                V. Other
                    A. Fundraisers: Each summer SCAMP will participate in at least one fundraiser which has been not only been helpful in our endeavor to provide a quality camp experience, but helps us to provide extra activities to campers.  Please consider supporting us in any summer planned activites.

                     B. Special Events: Each summer SCAMPers enjoy a variety of special activities brought to us by Oakland County Parks and Recreation such as jumpers, puppet shows and moonwalks.  Floatilla is a wonderful day that has been a strong tradition for almost 20 years.  The members of the Walnut Lake Association have organized a day where all campers receive a boat ride.  This is an amazing day made possible by individuals taking the day off of work and volunteering their time in giving a boat ride to campers.

We have been very thankful to the Elks of Michigan who for countless years has provided over $35,000 in scholarship assistance to our campers.  Without this help, many campers would not be able to attend.  Each local lodge participates in fundraisers which work toward their Major Projects which helps to support groups like SCAMP.  Every summer Elks from local lodges join us for a visitation and a tour.  Typically the campers put on a talent show for the visitors in which each class puts on an act.  This has become a fun tradition for all.

                     C. Confidentiality: It is important to remember when discussing campers outside of SCAMP to not use the child’s first and last name.  Please be respectful when discussing them and not to disclose any personal information to anyone outside of SCAMP.

                     D. Positive Public Relations: SCAMP has a long and proud tradition of providing a camp experience to individuals in Metro Detroit.  We rely on word of mouth to help us reach new individuals who would benefit from our summer program.  Please refer us to anyone you think who would benefit from our program once you complete your camp experience.

                     E. Supporters of SCAMP (SOS):  If you would like to be a part of the SCAMP family once you have completed your experience you may do so by helping volunteer at or attending our fundraisers.  SOS is full of past employees who often get together for social events while raising awareness for our program.  The time commitment is minimal (typically once or twice a year); however the rewards cannot be measured.
