What is SCAMP? SCAMP is a 5-week summer program that seeks to provide an exciting and therapeutic summer program for individuals with disablitites ages 3-26 in the Metro Detroit area. Bloomfield SCAMP was founded in 1967 and was the first summer camp in our area to provide a summer program for indivduals with disablities. During the early years, SCAMP served as many as 400 campers and has touched the lives of many in our area. In the early 1970s we worked with Clarkston to help start their SCAMP. In the past 10 years other programs have started and we are excited that more individuals are being served in their home school or with us.
Specific Groups Served:
►3-4: SCAMP serves any child who is receiving special education services of any kind, who is speech and language delayed, or is labeled “at-risk” in this class.
►5-8: SCAMP serves any child in this class who is receiving any special education service.
► 9-12: SCAMP serves any child who is receiving services under the label of: CI (Cognitively Impaired), PI, (Physically Impaired), AI (Autistically Impaired), VI (Visually Impaired)
► 13-26: SCAMP serves any child who is receiving special education services under the label of CI (Cognitively Impaired), AI (Autistically Impaired), or PI (Physically Impaired). Campers are in the mild to moderate range on each spectrum and must be able to transition through out the day with minimal support, be semi-independent, and not demonstrate any behaviors that are dangerous to themselves or others.
Within the SCAMP program - there are three self-contained programs.
Ages 3-4 Speech & Language Delay program: These children have been labeled speech delayed and are being serviced under this label in an IEP. Partipants in this group are functioning close to age level and no major cognitive delays are present.
Ages 3-12 D or HH program. Children in this group are serviced in a deaf or hard of hearing program during the school year. Center based children enroll here. This group requires a minimum enrollment and is subject to cancellation. This group may be broken into two classes to better meet the needs of the children in this class based on age or ability as deemed appropriate. Children must be fluent at sign or use it as their primary mode of communication to be enrolled in this group. Brenda Bujold, SCAMP D/HH Supervisor and classroom instructor will assist with placements.
Ages 13-26 Physically Impaired program. This classroom is designed around the student who is wheelchair bound with mild to moderate cognitive functioning. Many participants attend Farmington Public Schools center based program at Warner Middle School or Harrison High School. Any individual who is wheelchair bound is free to register in this special class. This class has additional staff to meet individual camper’s needs.
Upper SCAMP: Ages 13-26
Participants in this program typically have mild to moderate cognitive and physical impairments, mild autism and visual impairments. SCAMP is generally not appropriate for individuals whose primary label is EI or individuals with severe autism in this age group. All participants must be semi-independent and be able to function in 3-camper to 1-adult ratio and must not be a danger to themselves or anyone else.
Assistance will be given to changing, eating, and light toileting as necessary. SCAMP does not provide “one-on-ones” however welcomes them from any outside agency or school district if an individual’s need is greater than what SCAMP provides.
Campers enjoy a variety of structured activities that focus on social skills improvement, language enrichment, and prevocational skills are focused on at SCAMP. They also enjoy art and music therapy and physical education. Participants in this program will swim on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at Walnut Lake which is located behind West Hills Middle School in West Bloomfield. Special activities are brought to SCAMP such as moonwalks and sports mobiles by Oakland County Parks and Recreation.
